Byzantine Icon of Holy Napkin
Theme Description
The Holy Napkin icon, or “Not Made By Human Hands” (known to Orthodox Christians as the Holy Mandylion), is the very first icon ever made, and Christ made it in a miraculous way. The faithful believe that St. Veronica, a woman from Jerusalem that Christ healed because of her great faith, encountered Jesus along the Via Dolorosa on the way to Golgotha. When she paused to wipe the sweat and blood off his face with her veil, his image was imprinted on the cloth. This event is commemorated by one of the Stations of the Cross, and according to legend, Veronica later traveled to Rome to present the cloth to the Roman Emperor Tiberius.
