Greek Icon of Crucifixion (Sinai)
Theme Description
Christ was crucified on Golgotha (meaning place of the skull), which some faiths believe to be the burial site of Adam. The Church accepts this liturgically. Here we have Jesus Christ, the Second Adam, triumphing over death by death. The skull is Adam's. The top bar reads 'King of Glory' which is His true title. To Jesus' right stands his Mother, the Theotokos along with the Myrrh-bearing women. To his left is John along with the Centurion who glorified Christ. Depiction of Icon found in Sinai.
